Atkins Diet Plan Induction Phase

Atkins diet plan induction phase is the first phase of Atkins diet.  This phase of Atkins diet plan lasts for 2 weeks.  During this 2 weeks you limit your intake of carbohydrates to less than 20 grams a day.  This amount amount in approximately seven crackers, or a large apple, or a slice and a half of bread.  The induction phase of Atkins's diet plan is designed to switch your body from burning carbohydrate to primarily burning fat for energy, this will help you to lose weight and control your appetite.  During this two weeks of Atkins diet plan period, you may lose up to 16 pounds.

Atkins Diet Plan - Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL)

Atkins diet plan ongoing weight loss phase is designed to help you maintain your weight loss until you achieved optimum body weight.  During this phase of atkin's diet plan, emphasis is on unprocessed foods while maintaining your weight loss.  Gradually add foods in roughly 5 grams carb increment a week and observe to ensure that you have gradual weight loss.  If not, take a step backward.  You can probably move beyond vegetables to food like nuts, berries and possibly whole grain.

Rules of Atkins Diet Plan OWL

  • When on Atkins diet plan OWL phase, consume mainly protein and fat

  • Increase daily carb gradually by not more than 5 grams each week.

  • Add new food group in the Atkins diet plan OWL food list one at a time.

  • If new foods provoke weight gain, or increase appetite or cravings, stop taking them immediately.

  • Continue Atkins diet plan OWL until you have 5 to 10 pounds left to lose.


Atkins Diet Pre Maintenance

Life Long Maintenance

In the previous stages of Atkins diet plan, you keep losing weight slowly and can add a few grams of carbs a day.  Once you have reached your goal, you are in the lifetime maintenance stage of Atkins diet plan.  At this stage, your carb intake will be around 40-60 gram, depending on individuals.

At every stage of Atkins diet, you are allowed unlimited meat, eggs, and fatty foods.  You must however stay away from high carbohydrate food like breads, starchy vegetables and some fruits when on Atkins diet.
