Brief History on
Atkins Diet
Atkins Diet was the brainchild of
Dr. Robert C. Atkins. The Atkins Nutritional
Approach was first introduced in Dr. Atkins' book titled “Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution” in 1972. In
fact, the history of Atkins Diet began in the 1960s when Dr. Atkins
started the controlled carbohydrate nutritional approach with his
overweight patients. After the first publication, Dr. Atkins
published a few more editions in 1992, 1999 and 2002 with the title "Dr.
Atkins' New Diet Revolution".
Atkins Diet encountered a lot of disagreement,
resistance and was not accepted well by the medical fraternity when it was
first introduced as it had been widely
misunderstood. Nevertheless, Dr. Atkins was a firm believer of what he practiced that
he even set up an organization to uphold his teachings.
Dr.
Atkins, unfortunately, passed away on 17 April 2003 from complications
arose from his injuries after a fall. Nevertheless, his good work
continues on by the foundations and organization he founded. The
good doctor has left behind his legacy that has helped to improve the
lives of so many people even after his passing.
Why Atkins Diet?
During his medical practice, Dr. Atkins realized the culprit that made
us fat is the high-sugar diet that most of us have been brought up with.
A high-sugar diet is intake of foods that are laden with too much
refined carbohydrates, sugar and white flour. People had been
taught to cut down on fat and adopt a low-fat diet which is low in fat
but high in refined carb or sugar to make them taste good.
Although many were already shunning fat, the number of obesity cases was
on the rise. As obesity cases were increasing, the number of type
2 diabetes cases was also escalating. Obesity surely is the
gateway to type 2 diabetes.
Prompted by this,
Dr. Atkins advocated a diet that used a controlled carbohydrate
nutritional approach which is also being known as Atkins Diet. This
has been able to help millions of people to lose weight and keep off
obesity and more importantly, type 2 diabetes. There were studies
that showed significant improvement in cholesterol and
triglycerides in the blood work of people who were on low carbohydrate
diet that could induce the preferred shift to burn stored fat in the
body for energy. In recent years, more and more medical
professionals recognize this controlled carbohydrate nutritional
approach as one of the treatment or auxiliary treatment choices to
overcome obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease that are
usually aggravated by the over intake of carbohydrates.
What is Atkins Diet?
Atkins diet is basically a diet that controlled the intake of
carbohydrate until it is low enough to trigger our body to burn our
stored fat as primary fuel. While it is cautious on the intake of
carb, Atkins diet allows us to eat meat, fowl, fish and eggs freely
without the need to count calories. There are many diets out there
but many of us will feel hungry all the time when following those diets
that restrict calories. However, when doing Atkins diet we can eat
until we feel satisfied and keep hunger pains away.
